Do you know how sometimes you just can’t help yourself? You just want some ice cream and aren’t satisfied until you get some. Can’t wait for the end of a hot day to have a cold beer? You just can’t say no to yourself. None of us can quite figure out what farmhand Harvey’s fascination with the delicata squash in the field is. It started about 3 weeks ago when Harvey showed up in the market with 3 or 4 delicata winter squash. He asked me if they were ready to harvest? I responded it may have been better to ask that question before he picked them. I said they were close but should cure a while longer in the field. He asked everyday if he could harvest some of the delicata and everyday I said not yet. I finally had to say,”Dude, what is this obsession with harvesting the squash?” I would find him gazing across the squash field as in some sort of delicata trance. Even on the list I put out for the daily chores for the farmhands I felt I had to put in CAPITAL letters, “NO PICKING DELICATA SQUASH!” I picked one, sliced it up and cooked it to share with Harvey this past Saturday. He had never had it before. I asked what he thought the slices tasted like and he said, “french fries!” I knew this would probably strengthen his love affair. Well today is the day, we are harvesting the delicata squash today and farmhand Harvey almost seems high! Weird…
